Moon Cycles and Its Energies

Bonnie Moss (c) November,2012

“The Moon rules the emotions, so one can expect to experience feelings of
"disconnectedness," as well as emotional upsets, turnarounds and variability.”

Full Moon over trees The Moon graces the sky during all its lunar cycles. Any moon-gazer can feel the presence of the unknown about it. The Moon brings with it an aura of mysticism. Different cultures around the world believe in the powerful energies of the moon. Songs, poetry, music and other artwork are composed about the moon, romanticizing its bright, cold ,mysterious and haunting presence in the sky. In the world of astrology, divination, magick and science, the moon has a prominent place. Energies of the moon cycles Quarter moon –the right half of the Moon is lit (ninety degrees from sun, end of first quarter, beginning of second quarter). The purpose is about the shape of things to come. The energies involve courage, luck, motivation,a time for friendship and elemental magick. The theme of the first quarter moon is focus on luck. Waxing cycle of the moon-this cycle of the Moon refers to the period of time from the New Moon to the Full Moon. The energy from this cycle should be used in "drawing" that which you want towards you. It's a good time to begin new projects and expand any current efforts. It's also a time to craft workings that concern love, harmony, balance and peace,as well as protection and healing. Waxing gibbous moon- the moon lends its energies to bring out courage, patience, peace and harmony, paying attention to details. Waning Cycle -the waning cycle of the Moon is the period from the Full Moon to the New Moon. This is the cycle to use for banishing and rejecting baneful aspects, such as disease and negativity, as well as dissolving destructive energies of all types. A waning gibbous moon is a time for banishments, a time to break bad habits, undo negative influences and this is also a good time for divination. The waning gibbous and waning crescent phases is when the moon's potency/energy decreases. These decreasing and powerful energies can be a good time for banishing rituals. It is a time to work off negativities. The dark moon is also known as black moon and the Lost Moon -it is a good time for banishing and release, time to break bad habits, undo negative influences, time for divination, clear thoughts of negativities, anger, pain, wrong choices and other burdens. It is a good time to do cleansing around your surroundings and clear blocks in your personal energy centers. The new moon lends its energies to new beginnings, self-improvement, creative ventures, a time to appreciate the beauty around you.The new moon is a time to think of abundance. Farmers do their plantings during the new moon. It can also open the possibility of change. A lot is written about the new moon. It only takes a few minutes to focus on your wishes, to find clarity and peace. There are, of course, other lunar energies beyond simple waning and waxing moons. These include each of the phases of the moon within the cycle, as well as special moons, such as the Blue Moon or the Harvest Moon. It's also a good idea to craft your working towards the correct astrological placement of the moon. Blue Moon A Blue Moon is that wonderful occurence when the Full Moon shows us her face twice in one month. Also known as a Goal Moon, it's an excellent time to set new goals for yourself.
Eclipses

The Lunar Eclipses represent the perfect union of the Sun and Moon. Any type of magick worked or energy sent out during this time will be amplified. Lunar eclipses occur on the full moon and are of three types:

A partial lunar eclipse is when the Moon passes through the umbra. Penumbral lunar eclipse is when the Moon passes outside the umbra in a region called the penumbra. This refers to an “almost shaded area .” The penumbra receives some partial rays of the sun, thus making the prenumbral lunar eclipse the weakest of the three types. This eclipse is difficult to detect even with a telescope. Total lunar eclipse-the Moon entirely passes through the earth's dark shadow or umbra,or umbrella, the shaded area."umbrella" comes from the latin root, "umbra" About 35% of lunar eclipse are of the penumbral type,30 % are partial eclipse, which can be seen with the naked eye. Total eclipse are about 35%. The total eclipse is the most dramatic and intense eclipse from astrological point of view. The nodes of the moon are mysterious and unusual in nature thus, during an eclipse, these nodes aspect both personal planets, the Sun and the Moon are cut off from their normal functioning. During a lunar eclipse, the moon creates an opening in our psyches for subtle energies to enter, either positively or negatively. It is believed that this is a good time to do spiritual practices, meditation or chanting mantras. It is not a recommended time for significant material endeavours like signing documents or having surgery. Take advantage of these subtle energies; try to fast before you start your spiritual practise. Whatever position in the horoscope that an eclipse takes place represents an area of potential change and transformation. This is especially true if it's close in degrees to key positions like the ascendant, Sun or Moon, or another planet. It takes more than one monthly cycle of the moon to get desired results. Any intentions stated or written down carries power, so please take care in considering the things that you really want. The saying "Be careful what you ask for, you just might get it." is fair warning whenever setting your moon intentions into motion.
